Bought these earphones just before Christmas and they were delivered between Christmas and New Year. They are not the first Thieaudio set that I own, having previously bought a set of the Legacy 3 before. My main reason for purchasing the L4’s is that they have been described as being tuned along the same lines as the Thieaudio tribrids (Monarch and Clairvoyance), so wanted to try out the tuning before thinking about spending more money on a tribrid.
Since buying the L3’s, it appears that Thieaudio has upped their game massively in how they present their earphones. I’m very impressed with the cases that the Legacy 4 arrives in. Opening the outer black cardboard box, reveals a 24cm x 17cm x 6cm case. When you open the case, you find a smaller (13cm x 8cm x 5cm) earphone case, which also holds the cable. There are six silicone tips of differing sizes but no foam tips. The earphones are then presented separately in a foam cutout. The colour scheme on these earphones is amazing, with blue, gold, black and white glitter swirls. The shells are smooth as silk and very comfortable even with long listening sessions. What also impressed me was that they are light as a feather! The included 3.5mm single ended cable is lightweight, well woven and has a decent strain relief sleeve going into the jack. It also has a chin slider which is effective and doesn’t slip. At the other end of the cable are 2 pin connectors which is moulded around your ears with plastic tubing, but no memory wire.
Now on to the sound… Initially, I was not impressed with the sound. Out of the box they sounded too bright. However, after changing tips, moving the tuning switches around etc. I was able to tame the highs and have to say that I am now very impressed with the sound that the Legacy 4’s reproduce.
The Legacy 4 contains a 8mm dynamic driver and 3 balanced armature drivers in each earpiece. The dynamic driver is for the low end and packs a decent punch when needed but doesn’t affect the mids. What I did find though is initially, the mids were affected by the highs. However, after the changes I mentioned, I could get the earphones to a point where the mids were present and unaffected. This set is on the brighter side of tuning, but this also brings out a great amount of detail in the music and I was hearing things in my favourite tracks that I hadn’t heard before, even on the Legacy 3’s. However, I have found that badly mastered tracks are shown up with the Legacy 4’s. Some tracks that I do listen to and had previously noticed as badly recorded are just skipped on the Legacy 4.
