Disclaimer
I recently received the KZ-EDX Ultra iems from Linsoul, courtesy of their Soul Rewards Giveaway club. This is my first time winning since being in this club and my very first iem review. Compared to most members of the group I consider myself to be inexperienced but I am a proud owner of various iems from the beginner BLONs to the midrange TANCHJIM & MOONDROP iems and finally the end game THIEAUDIO Monarch & MKII THIEAUDIO V16 Divinity. I will review the KZ-EDX Ultra iems as a beginner iem due to the price point of 20$ USD.
Design & Fit
For beginner iems, the KZ-EDX Ultra has good build quality for the price. The shell looks and feels like hard plastic but is built well enough to feel reasonably durable. There is the gold KZ logo displayed on the exterior of the shell when wearing on your ear. As far as the comfort and fit, I find them to be a little bit big and not as comfortable as smaller iems, especially when putting them on. The nozzle is on the shorter side which means it won’t go deep inside your ears but with a larger size eartip, it provides great noise isolation compared to other iems of this price range.
Sound
I spent some time going through a list of songs with the Ultra and I immediately found this to be a vocal focused iem. Compared to some of my other similarly priced beginner iems, the Ultra does a much better job with vocals and clarity.
In my opinion, the KZ-EDX Ultra is tuned well but with one big con. Starting off with the con, I found the highs to be much too sharp for my liking, during the session I could hear piercing unnatural, excessive high frequencies.
The midrange is probably this iem’s greatest strength. It provides a smooth fullness to your music and works very well in conjunction with a solid bass. As someone who has many bassy iems, the Ultra is a good addition to my collection.
For about $20, the KZ-EDX Ultra is a good beginner vocal focused iem. If this is your preference, then this might be a good iem to add to your collection. From an honest personal perspective, if it is within your budget, I would spend some extra money and go into a higher price category and pick up something I don’t find myself constantly looking to upgrade. For $20 dollars you really can’t go wrong!
